 Lachit Barphukan - Commander Essay

Lachit Barphukan was a famous warrior and commander who is remembered for his role in defending the kingdom of Ahom (located in present-day Assam, India) against the Mughal Empire during the 17th century. Barphukan was born in the year 1622 to a noble Ahom family. He received a thorough education in the arts of war and strategy, and was known for his intelligence and bravery. He rose through the ranks of the Ahom military and eventually became the commander-in-chief of the Ahom army. In 1667, the Mughals, led by the Emperor Aurangzeb, invaded the kingdom of Ahom with the aim of annexing it to their empire. The Ahom army, under the leadership of Barphukan, put up a fierce resistance and managed to repel the Mughal invaders. One of the most famous battles fought by Barphukan was the Battle of Saraighat, which took place in 1671. The Mughals had built a fort on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River and were using it as a base to launch attacks on the Ahom kingdom. Barphukan led a daring attack on the fort, crossing the river in boats made of inflated animal skins. The Mughals were taken by surprise and were forced to retreat. Barphukan's victory at Saraighat was a major turning point in the war against the Mughals. It not only thwarted their plans of annexing Ahom, but also established the Ahom kingdom as a formidable power in the region. Lachit Barphukan is remembered as a hero in Assam and is celebrated for his bravery and military genius. He is remembered as a symbol of the resistance against foreign aggression and is considered one of the greatest commanders in the history of Assam.
